Orpheus & Eurydice

Orpheus & Eurydice

A web-based platformer where UX, storytelling, and game mechanics come together in a mythological journey.

Project Overview

A narrative-driven platformer that reimagines the classic myth: Orpheus willingly sacrifices himself to save Euridice, spawning distinct gameplay paths and a final reunion in the portal between life and death.

The challenge

Design and develop a dual-character platform game balancing storytelling, intuitive controls, and clear progression to keep players engaged without overwhelming them.

Research

Exploring Myth & Mechanics

We started by analyzing the original myth and its emotional beats to inform game flow, level structure, and character contrasts. Competitive titles were reviewed to ensure our gameplay felt fresh yet familiar. For example, we studied acclaimed platformers like Unravel and Limbo to explore gameplay dynamics and understand what makes a game truly engaging and well-crafted.

  • Identified narrative pivot points for gameplay transitions

  • Extracted cues from successful platformers to balance challenge and accessibility

  • Shaped the emotional tone to support clarity and empathy, reinforcing the narrative

Concept

Dual Paths, Shared Story

The core idea: split paths representing Orpheus in the underworld and Euridice in the living world. Each character brings different mechanics (Obstacles vs. Puzzles), converging at the portal.

Roles:

  • Orpheus is action-focused, jump & dodge sequences

  • Euridice is puzzle-focused, environment manipulation

All elements build toward reconnection, emphasizing perseverance, contrast, and unity.

Execution

Experience Design

This was one of the key areas I supported, contributing to the definition of the overall player journey through narrative structuring and interaction mapping. My work helped shape the game mechanics in a way that ensured a consistent and engaging user experience.

Visual & Interaction Design

We designed 2D sprite assets and UI elements in Illustrator.

On the visual side, my main contribution was supporting the 3D team in modeling and building scenes for the history section using 3DS Max. These visuals supported the emotional arc of the gameplay.

Development

The entire game was developed using Phaser. We implemented character behaviors, transitions, and UI feedback to create a responsive and accessible web-based experience.

Playtesting & Iteration

Playtest sessions guided refinements in difficulty curves, player feedback systems, and interaction clarity. Insights from each iteration were used to adjust both narrative pacing and mechanical balance.

Outcome

From Vision to Playable Reality

The game launched successfully, praised for its dynamic gameplay, and polished visual style.

• Seamless character-switch mechanics kept players engaged

• Feedback praised gradual difficulty tuning and visual clarity

• Team synergy maintained across six months with consistent sprint cycles and communication stands
