Project Overview
For many, dogs aren't just pets, they're beloved family members. But unlike other family members, we can't directly communicate with them. Imagine being able to do so, understanding their needs and feelings. That's the dream Fido aim to achieve.
The challenge
How might we design a tool that bridge the communication gap between humans and their pets?
Research
Significant growth in the pet care sector mirrored by an expanding market for pet services.
The dog population has nearly doubled over the past ten years. This growth is reflected in the rapidly expanding pet services market, which surpassed the livestock market in size within just four year and the gap is expected to continue widening.
Wearable devices for dogs now track vital signs and GPS location, enabling real-time health and activity monitoring. Home cameras with features like treat dispensers let owners interact with their pets remotely.
This growing integration of technology into pet care highlights a demand for smarter, more connected solutions. Fido is designed to meet that need.

Concept
How can we better understand anything?
By adopting its point of view.
To better understand our dogs, we needed to see the world through their eyes. Rather than relying on external cameras, a wearable camera capturing their direct perspective provides valuable insights into their behaviors and needs.
The concept is inspired by modern smart glasses, which capture images and contextual data to provide insights about the surroundings. By adapting this technology for dogs and presenting the information conversationally to the owner, Fido enable a new and innovative form of human-animal interaction.

Execution
Prototyping During Research
Execution began alongside the research phase. Early interface concepts and interactive prototypes were developed to explore a wide range of potential features. These served as tools during interviews with dog owners, helping to surface real user needs and preferences.
Validating the Concept and Defining the MVP Focus
During the evaluation of early prototypes, user feedback consistently highlighted strong interest in a conversational interface, enabling natural interaction between humans and pets. This emotionally engaging experience emerged as a defining element of the concept. In light of market saturation around pet health tracking, the project direction was refined to prioritize this unique, interactive layer as the core of the MVP. This focus established a clear point of differentiation while aligning closely with user expectations and behavioral insights.

Expanding into Environmental Awareness
Further development addressed environmental monitoring, allowing the system to interpret surroundings and support customizable safety alerts. These alerts could be triggered by user-defined parameters, enhancing preventive capabilities and situational awareness.

Software Development & System Integration
The implementation phase leveraged open-source smart glasses frameworks, which were adapted and fine-tuned to support a custom alert system. An important aspect of this fine-tuning involved providing contextual input to the AI, enabling it to interpret images as being captured from a dog’s point of view. This perspective-aware framing enhanced the system’s ability to interpret environmental cues and respond to user requests with greater accuracy.

Hardware Assembly & Final Prototype
The software was then integrated into compact, wearable hardware to enable real-time detection and interaction. The MVP was deployed on an Arduino-based board equipped with a camera and microphone capable of running lightweight machine learning models. The system was assembled with a power supply and control switch, and housed in a custom 3D-modeled case, resulting in a fully functional prototype.
Outcome
Advancing Pet Safety
Fido enhances the daily lives of dog owners by strengthening the human–animal bond, increasing peace of mind, and improving safety. The current prototype includes a Bluetooth-enabled physical device that connects to a computer, allowing users to set and detect customizable triggers and interact with their pet via a chatbot in the dedicated app.
To support future development, a detailed Figma prototype illustrates use cases and envisioned design evolution. For a full demo or further information, feel free to get in touch.
